A research-led artistic project
Walking the Coastline is a solo exhibition by artist and researcher Matylda Jarosz, presented at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta. The show brings together paintings, drawings, and textile works inspired by Malta’s coastal landscapes, with walking as a core artistic method. Layered materials, woven structures, and references to limestone erosion explore themes of fragility, transformation, and the bond between body, landscape, and memory.
Developed through walking, photography, natural pigments, textiles, and digital media, the exhibition investigates how embodied encounters with coastal environments can inform new approaches to environmental awareness. Visitors experience an installation that reflects on place, materiality, and ecological interconnectedness, blending handcrafted materials with computational processes. The works emerge directly from the landscape, using natural pigments derived from coastal geology and textiles rooted in traditional fibre practices.
Jarosz’s practice examines sustainability as both an environmental concern and an ethical, creative framework for contemporary art. By bringing together physical and digital processes, the installation invites viewers to see landscape as a living, interconnected system shaped by geological time, ecological change, and human intervention. The exhibition is held in the Basement Vaults of Palazzo de La Salle, offering an atmospheric setting for this research-led project.
Matylda Jarosz is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher whose practice explores landscape, sustainability, and contemporary technologies.
