Why Portugal?
Portugal is the only country that shares a land border with Spain, and that proximity changes the logic of the trip: from Madrid, Seville or Badajoz you can drive straight into Lisbon or the Alentejo without ever seeing an airport, and from Vigo or Salamanca northern Portugal is under two hours by road. For travellers flying from Barcelona, Valencia or Palma, a flight to Lisbon or Porto takes around an hour and a quarter, often shorter than a train ride to some Spanish provincial capitals.
Language is barely a barrier either: written Portuguese is fairly easy to follow for Spanish speakers, and staff in tourist areas typically handle Spanish or English without issue. Despite the short distance, the change of scenery is real, with a cuisine built around fish and seafood, distinctive tiled facades and viewpoints, and cities like Lisbon and Porto that feel clearly different from any Spanish destination on the peninsula.
Price remains a key draw: accommodation, dining and public transport generally cost less than in major Spanish cities, which makes Portugal an affordable, repeatable weekend break rather than only a long-holiday destination. Lisbon and Porto work well as two- or three-day trips, while the Algarve suits longer beach stays, particularly in shoulder season when the heat is milder than in southern Spain.
Where to stay
- Lisbon — A hilltop capital of trams and river viewpoints over the Tagus, just over an hour's flight from Madrid or Seville.
- Porto — The city of port wine and the Douro river, with direct flights from several Spanish cities and an easy drive from Galicia.
- Faro — The gateway to the Algarve, with beaches and cliffs about as far by road as Huelva or Seville.
- Vila Nova de Gaia — Across the Douro from Porto, home to the historic port wine cellars open for tours and tastings.
A three-day weekend in Lisbon or Porto typically runs 250-400 EUR per person including flight, a 3-4 star hotel and meals; driving in from Spain lowers the cost by cutting out the flight. A double room averages 60-100 EUR a night in shoulder season, a set lunch menu 10-15 EUR, and a short tram or metro ride 1.50-2 EUR. The Algarve in peak season (July-August) pushes accommodation prices up 30-50% compared with May, June, September or October.
