Exeter
Exeter grew from the Roman fort of Isca Dumnoniorum, and its Gothic cathedral has the longest continuous medieval stone vaulting in the world. The quayside area, once a wool-trading harbour, now holds cafes and independent shops, while Roman-to-medieval city walls still trace the old centre.
