Assisi is a walled hill town in Umbria built around the tomb and basilica of St Francis, alongside the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the Roman-era Temple of Minerva. It draws religious pilgrims and day-trippers from Perugia and functions mainly as a compact, foot-only historic centre.
