- Most shops and public life run close to normal in the run-up, but the evening of 6 January and the day of 7 January are quiet, family-centred times — not a public festival to watch, more a tradition to respect.
- The Church of Saint Sava (Hram Svetog Save) in Belgrade, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, holds the most significant public Christmas Eve gathering and midnight liturgy in the city.
- The strict Christmas Eve fast (no meat or dairy until the Badnje veče meal) is widely observed, so festive tables that evening lean on fish, beans and bread rather than the meat-heavy Christmas Day feast that follows on the 7th.
