Bill Callahan and Lonnie Holley at the Neptune

Bill Callahan brings his baritone songwriting to the Neptune in Seattle's University District, sharing the bill with Lonnie Holley. Callahan first built his name under the band name Smog, making home-made tape-albums before signing with Drag City, where his records grew more polished and instrumentally varied.

His songs often rely on simple, repetitive chord progressions, and his lyrics touch on relationships, animals, relocation, and nature. His delivery is dispassionate and darkly ironic, with each album often built around a single recurring character. After taking a break from music following the birth of his son, he has returned to recording at a more prolific pace.

The Neptune is in the University District at 1303 Northeast 45th Street, with balcony seating reached by stairs and ramps. It offers a neighborhood setting for an artist whose work tends toward spare, introverted songwriting.
