Things to Do in Nashville 2026: Ryman, Broadway & Honky-Tonks in the United States

Nashville is the one American music city where the reputation and the reality match. Live music runs from late morning until the small hours on Lower Broadway, the songwriting industry behind much of country radio is based a few blocks away on Music Row, and the venues range from a 90-seat listening room to an arena — all inside an area small enough to walk.

Quick answer

That concentration is what makes it worth a trip rather than a stopover. In most cities seeing three venues in a night means three car journeys; in Nashville it means walking. The trade-off is that Lower Broadway has become very loud and very busy, and the better nights are usually the ones that start or end somewhere else.

Below: the venues that define the city, how to do Broadway without only doing Broadway, the sport, and what else there is beyond music. Upcoming events are listed further down and update themselves.

Broadway, and what to do instead of Broadway

Lower Broadway is genuinely worth seeing. The honky-tonks — Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and Robert's Western World are the two with the deepest history — run free live music from late morning until closing, with bands playing for tips. Nobody charges a cover, so you can move between four or five bars in an evening and hear four or five bands.

It is also relentlessly busy and heavily geared to visitors, and most people find one night of it is enough. The alternatives are close by: East Nashville across the river for smaller rooms and better bars, the Elliston Place strip for rock, Germantown for a quieter dinner-then-show evening, and the Bluebird out in Green Hills for the opposite experience entirely — a silent room and a songwriter three metres away.

The Ryman is the other thing not to skip. It was built as a tabernacle in 1892, held the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 until the Opry moved to its own house in 1974, and is small enough that there is no bad seat. The Opry has a long-standing tradition of returning downtown to the Ryman for a run of winter shows.

Sport in Nashville

Bridgestone Arena sits on Lower Broadway itself, which makes a Nashville Predators hockey game about as convenient as sport in America gets — the arena doors and the honky-tonks are on the same block. The NHL season runs October to April, and the crowd is loud in a way that surprises visitors expecting hockey to be a northern thing.

The Tennessee Titans play NFL football at Nissan Stadium across the Cumberland River, walkable from downtown over the pedestrian bridge, on a handful of Sundays between September and January. Nashville SC play MLS soccer at GEODIS Park, a purpose-built soccer stadium at the fairgrounds south of downtown, through the spring-to-autumn season.

Beyond the music

  • Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum — downtown, and the best single explanation of why this city exists. Its tours of RCA Studio B on Music Row leave from here.
  • Music Row — the publishing and label district south-west of downtown. Not a spectacle, but the reason the songwriters are here.
  • The Gulch, 12 South and East Nashville — the three neighbourhoods worth an afternoon each for food, coffee and independent shops.
  • The Cumberland riverfront and the pedestrian bridge — the best view back at the downtown skyline, and a two-minute walk from Broadway.
  • Day trips — the Tennessee hills start within an hour of the city in most directions, and a rental car opens up a lot of it.

FAQ

What is there to do in Nashville in 2026?
Live music every night — the Ryman, the Bluebird Cafe, Exit/In, 3rd and Lindsley, the Basement rooms and Brooklyn Bowl, plus free bands in the Broadway honky-tonks from late morning. Add Predators hockey at Bridgestone Arena in winter, Titans football in autumn, Nashville SC soccer in the warmer months, and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Is live music in Nashville free?
On Lower Broadway, largely yes — the honky-tonks do not charge a cover and the bands play for tips. Ticketed rooms like the Ryman, the Bluebird Cafe, Exit/In and Brooklyn Bowl are separate, and the Bluebird in particular sells out well ahead.
How do I get tickets to the Bluebird Cafe?
Through the venue directly, and early — it holds around 90 people and shows go quickly. It is out in Green Hills rather than downtown, so plan a car or rideshare, and be aware the room enforces silence during performances.
Do you need a car in Nashville?
Not for downtown, Broadway, the Ryman, Bridgestone Arena and the riverfront, which are all walkable. You will want a car or rideshare for the Bluebird Cafe in Green Hills, the Grand Ole Opry House at Opryland, and East Nashville after dark.
When is the best time to visit Nashville?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable and catch both the outdoor season at Ascend Amphitheater and the start of the football and hockey calendars. Summer is hot and busy; winter is quieter downtown and is when the Opry traditionally returns to the Ryman.
