Bernd Lafrenz (born 1955 in Kiel) is a German theatre actor, comedian, author, director and theatre manager, known for solo comedies that adapt Shakespeare's plays. His style combines mask theatre, physical theatre, pantomime, clowning and parody. He studied Romance languages and Latin before training with Philippe Gaulier in Paris and with clowns Johannes Galli and Benito Gutmacher in Freiburg.
In 1982 he co-founded the Theater 'König Alfons' with Andreas Balzer, and in 1983 he presented his first Shakespeare solo, Hamlet, followed by Macbeth (1989) and Othello (1991). His later programs include Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Was ihr wollt and King Richard III; his own website lists eleven Shakespeare solo plays and over 5,000 performances.
A 2011 review in the Weser-Kurier described his one-man Hamlet in Bremen, in which he plays all the roles himself and the audience makes sound effects such as hooves and swords, using slapstick and commedia dell'arte techniques. He has performed in Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and France, including at Avignon, translated four of his pieces into French, and received an honorary Kleinkunstpreis Baden-Württemberg in 2019.
