Things to do in Glasgow 2026
Glasgow is Scotland's live music city, and it is not close — the calendar we track here runs about three times deeper than Edinburgh's outside festival season. The Barrowland Ballroom's sprung floor and neon sign are the city's signature room, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut is the small stage almost every Scottish band has played on the way up, and the OVO Hydro on the Clyde handles the arena tours. UNESCO named Glasgow a City of Music, and the venue list is the reason.

Quick answer
The daytime city is built around free collections. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum with the tall ship Glenlee moored outside, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park all give free general admission — an unusually strong wet-weather plan for a city with Glasgow's weather.

Glasgow venues worth knowing
Glasgow’s rooms are unusually distinct from one another — a Victorian ballroom, two converted churches, a former industrial yard, a riverside arena — and the venue is often the reason to go as much as the bill. These are the ones that appear most often in our Glasgow listings.
| Venue | Area | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| OVO Hydro | Clydeside | The city’s arena, on the SEC campus by the river |
| SEC Armadillo | Clydeside | Auditorium next to the Hydro; seated tours and comedy |
| Barrowland Ballroom | Gallowgate | Sprung-floor ballroom under a neon sign; a landmark room |
| King Tut's Wah Wah Hut | St Vincent Street | Small upstairs stage with an outsized reputation |
| O2 Academy Glasgow | Eglinton Street | Former cinema, mid-size touring bills |
| Saint Luke's | Calton | Deconsecrated church beside the Barrowlands |
| Òran Mór | West End | Converted church at the top of Byres Road; music and theatre |
| SWG3 | Yorkhill | Multi-space arts complex — Galvanizers, TV Studio, Poetry Club |
| The Hug and Pint | Great Western Road | Basement room for small and emerging bills |
| Glasgow Royal Concert Hall | Buchanan Street | Classical, orchestral and seated popular concerts |
| The Garage | Sauchiehall Street | Long-running club and gig venue on the main strip |
| Stereo | Renfield Lane | Basement venue beneath a vegan café; independent bookings |
| Pavilion Theatre | Renfield Street | Variety, comedy and pantomime in an Edwardian house |
What Glasgow is good for
- Live music, at every level — the depth of the small and mid-size circuit is the single strongest reason to come.
- Free museums — Kelvingrove, the Riverside Museum, GoMA and the Burrell Collection all give free general admission.
- Charles Rennie Mackintosh — House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park and the Mackintosh Tearooms on Sauchiehall Street both open their interiors to visitors; check opening times before crossing the city for either.
- Football — Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden Park all run tours, and the Scottish Football Museum sits at Hampden.
- Architecture — the medieval Glasgow Cathedral with the Victorian Necropolis on the hill above it, and the red-sandstone tenements of the West End.
- Eating and drinking — Finnieston, Ashton Lane and the Merchant City hold most of the bars and restaurants.
Getting around and when to go
The Subway loops the centre and the West End and is the quickest way between Buchanan Street and Kelvinhall for Kelvingrove; it takes contactless cards and phones at the gate with a daily cap, as do the city buses. Suburban trains cover everything else, and most city-centre venues are walkable from Central or Queen Street stations.
Glasgow Airport sits west of the city with a fast bus link into the centre, and Edinburgh is under an hour away by train from Queen Street — close enough that the two cities can share a single trip. Trains north from Queen Street also open up the Highlands and the West Highland Line.
Autumn and early winter are the densest part of the gig calendar. Summer is quieter indoors and wetter than its reputation suggests; the tourist crowd concentrates in Edinburgh during August, which is often the best time to have Glasgow to yourself.

FAQ
- What is there to do in Glasgow in 2026?
- Live music is the headline — the Barrowland Ballroom, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, the OVO Hydro, O2 Academy Glasgow, Saint Luke's, Òran Mór and SWG3 between them cover everything from arena tours to first-album gigs. In daylight: Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Riverside Museum and the tall ship Glenlee, the Burrell Collection, Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis, and stadium tours at Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden.
- Is Glasgow or Edinburgh better for live music?
- Glasgow, comfortably, outside of Edinburgh's August festival season — the number of upcoming gigs we list for Glasgow runs several times higher, and the venue circuit from the Barrowlands down to basement rooms is far deeper. Edinburgh's advantage is concentrated into one month of the year.
- Which museums in Glasgow are free?
- Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Riverside Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) and the Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park all give free general admission. Temporary exhibitions are sometimes ticketed separately, and individual venues close for refurbishment from time to time — check the Glasgow Life site before making a special trip.
- How do you get from Glasgow to Edinburgh?
- By train from Glasgow Queen Street — the journey takes under an hour with frequent departures through the day, which makes a day trip in either direction straightforward.
