Rebeldes Sem Causas is a Lisbon cultural event at Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema, listed on Agenda Cultural Lisboa. Check the official listing for exact times, tickets and any last-minute changes.
Throughout August, the Cinemateca Portuguesa in Lisbon presents "Rebeldes Sem Causas", a month-long film cycle exploring rebellion as portrayed in Hollywood cinema from the 1950s to the 1970s. The programme takes its title from Nicholas Ray's "Rebel Without a Cause" starring James Dean, and extends to classics like "Saturday Night Fever" with John Travolta, with the notable exception of "The Outsiders" (1983), which looks back to 1965.
The selected films delve into themes of youth, revolt, juvenile delinquency, coming of age, social exclusion, sexual repression or emancipation, and counterculture belonging. At its core, the cycle examines the particular sensibility of "rebellion without a cause" — the existential angst of adolescents and the sense of alienation from parents that erupts into generational conflict.
Screenings take place daily with two sessions: one in the Sala Luís de Pina (except the opening session on August 1 at 18h) and another on the Esplanade. This is a unique opportunity to experience classic cinema in the heart of Lisbon, both indoors and under the open sky.
The cycle explores rebellion in Hollywood cinema from the 1950s to the 1970s, focusing on youth, revolt, and generational conflict.
The programme includes 'Rebel Without a Cause' with James Dean, 'Saturday Night Fever' with John Travolta, and 'The Outsiders' (1983), among others.
