Descendents are an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in Manhattan Beach, California, by guitarist Frank Navetta, bassist Tony Lombardo, and drummer Bill Stevenson, initially playing a power-pop and surf-punk sound. In 1979 they recruited Stevenson's schoolmate Milo Aukerman as vocalist, shifting the band toward a faster, more melodic hardcore-punk approach. Since 1986, the lineup has remained Aukerman, Stevenson, guitarist Stephen Egerton, and bassist Karl Alvarez.

Über Descendents

The band's catalogue includes Milo Goes to College (1982), I Don't Want to Grow Up (1985), Everything Sucks (1996), and Hypercaffium Spazzinate (2016). Descendents are known for pairing hardcore's speed and aggression with strong melodic hooks and self-deprecating, diaristic lyrics about relationships, food, and coffee; Milo Goes to College has been ranked among the essential punk albums by Spin and Kerrang magazine. Their approach influenced later pop-punk and skate-punk bands, including Blink-182, Green Day, NOFX, and the Offspring.

Aukerman's academic pursuits, including a PhD in biochemistry, prompted repeated hiatuses over the band's history; during these gaps, Stevenson, Egerton, and Alvarez have continued recording and touring under the name All with rotating vocalists. Descendents reunited multiple times from the 1990s onward and have continued to tour and record into the 2020s, remaining active performers more than four decades after forming.
