Things to Do in Geneva: The Jet d’Eau, the Escalade & Lake Geneva

Geneva is Switzerland’s French-speaking counterweight to Zürich, and its events calendar reads differently for it. The busiest single venue in the city is the Théâtre de la Madeleine, which runs an almost continuous programme of French-language stand-up and one-person shows, while the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices — a converted hydraulic power station on the Rhône — carries the concert and classical end.

Quick answer

Two moments define the second half of the year. The Geneva International Film Festival, which covers film, television and digital storytelling, runs 30 October to 8 November 2026. Then in December comes the Escalade: the Course de l’Escalade road race through the Old Town on 5–6 December, followed by the Fête de l’Escalade itself on 11–13 December, the city’s commemoration of the failed night attack of 1602, marked with torch-lit processions in period costume and a chocolate cauldron smashed at the end of a family dinner.

The rest of Geneva is a short walk in any direction: the Jet d’Eau on the lake, the Old Town above it with the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre and Place du Bourg-de-Four, the Parc des Bastions and the Reformation Wall, the UN’s Palais des Nations and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in the international quarter, and Carouge across the Arve with its Sardinian-era grid of low houses and courtyards.

Where things happen

The Théâtre de la Madeleine is the single most active room in the city’s listings — a small Old Town theatre running French-language comedy and solo shows most weeks. If you follow the francophone stand-up circuit, this is where its Geneva dates land.

For music and larger productions, the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices on the Rhône handles concerts, opera and classical; Arena Genève out at Le Grand-Saconnex takes the arena-scale tours; and the Salle de l’Alhambra and Uptown Geneva fill in the mid-size and club end.

Note that much of Geneva’s programme is in French. Comedy in particular is almost entirely francophone — worth knowing before booking a ticket on the strength of a name.

Practical notes

  • Geneva Airport (GVA) has its own rail station with direct trains to Cornavin, the main station, in about six minutes.
  • Hotels and hostels issue guests a Geneva Transport Card covering free public transport for the duration of the stay — ask at check-in rather than buying tickets.
  • The Léman Express regional rail network links Geneva with the surrounding Swiss and French communes, which widens the range of realistic day trips considerably.
  • The airport sits on the French border and keeps a separate French sector with its own road access into Haute-Savoie. It matters only if you are heading straight on into France — for Geneva itself, use the Swiss exit and the rail station below the terminal.
  • CERN is in Meyrin on the city’s edge, reachable on the tram; visits to its public exhibitions are booked through CERN’s own site.

FAQ

What is the Escalade in Geneva?
The Escalade commemorates Geneva’s repulse of a night attack by the Duke of Savoy’s forces in 1602. It is marked each December with torch-lit processions in period costume through the Old Town, and — at family and communal dinners — with a chocolate cauldron that is smashed open. In 2026 the Fête de l’Escalade falls on 11–13 December.
When is the Course de l’Escalade?
The Course de l’Escalade is a mass-participation road race through Geneva’s Old Town, held in early December — 5–6 December in 2026, ahead of the Fête itself the following weekend. Entries and race categories are handled on the organiser’s site.
When is the Geneva International Film Festival?
GIFF runs in autumn across venues in the city. The 2026 edition runs 30 October to 8 November. Its programme spans film, television and digital and immersive work.
Do I need to buy public transport tickets in Geneva?
Usually not, if you are staying overnight. Hotels, hostels and campsites issue guests a Geneva Transport Card that covers public transport in the city for the length of the stay.
What is there to do in Geneva besides events?
The Jet d’Eau and the lakefront, the Old Town with the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre and Place du Bourg-de-Four, the Parc des Bastions and Reformation Wall, the Palais des Nations and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in the international quarter, the Bains des Pâquis on the lake, and the Carouge quarter across the Arve.
