The Omega Nebula, also known as Messier 17, is an H II region in the constellation Sagittarius, discovered in 1745 by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux. Located between 5,000 and 6,000 light-years from Earth, it spans some 15 light-years in diameter and is one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions in our galaxy. Its shape, resembling the Greek letter Omega, has earned it nicknames like the Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula, and Lobster Nebula.
At the heart of the nebula lies the open cluster NGC 6618, whose hot, young stars cause the surrounding gases to shine. The nebula contains up to 800 stars, including 100 of spectral type earlier than B9 and 9 of spectral type O, making it one of the youngest known clusters at just 1 million years old. Notable stars like the luminous blue variable HD 168607 and the blue hypergiant HD 168625 are associated with this region.
Early observations by John Herschel in the 1830s produced detailed sketches, and subsequent studies by Johann von Lamont and others have enriched our understanding. Recent observations by SOFIA in 2020 provided new insights into this dynamic star-forming region.
