The Omega Nebula, also known as Messier 17, is an H II region in the constellation Sagittarius, discovered by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745 and catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764. This celestial object lies between 5,000 and 6,000 light-years from Earth, spanning some 15 light-years in diameter, and is considered one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions in our galaxy. Its distinctive shape, likened to a Greek capital omega (Ω), has earned it nicknames like the Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula, Lobster Nebula, and Horseshoe Nebula.

Attendees can expect to witness a star-forming powerhouse, with the open cluster NGC 6618 embedded in the nebulosity, causing the gases to shine due to radiation from hot, young stars. The nebula hosts up to 800 stars, including 100 of spectral type earlier than B9 and 9 of spectral type O, plus over a thousand stars in formation on its outer regions. It is one of the youngest known clusters, with an age of just 1 million years. Notable stars include the luminous blue variable HD 168607 and the blue hypergiant HD 168625, both associated with the nebula.

This event offers a unique opportunity to explore a region rich in astronomical history, from John Herschel's early sketches in the 1830s to recent observations by SOFIA in 2020. The nebula's local geometry, similar to the Orion Nebula but viewed edge-on, provides a distinct perspective on star formation.
