Discover United States
The United States covers a continent and most of the climates on it: an Atlantic seaboard of colonial cities, the Appalachians and the Mississippi basin, the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the deserts of the Southwest and a Pacific coast from San Diego to Puget Sound. More than sixty national parks are spread across the country, and a dense domestic flight network makes one or two regions the realistic shape of a trip.
The cities vary as much as the terrain. Boston and Philadelphia hold the colonial and revolutionary record, and Washington keeps the national monuments and museums. Chicago and Detroit are Midwestern industrial cities, known now for architecture and for Motown. Nashville and Atlanta anchor the South, Phoenix sits in the Sonoran Desert, and Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego run down the West Coast.
Top places in United States
- Chicago — Skyscrapers along Lake Michigan, the Art Institute, architecture cruises on the river, and a blues and deep-dish tradition.
- Los Angeles & Southern California — Pacific beaches and the film industry, Griffith Observatory above the basin, and San Diego and Balboa Park down the coast.
- San Francisco & the Bay Area — Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars over steep hills, Alcatraz out in the bay and the wine country of Napa and Sonoma to the north.
- Washington, DC — The National Mall and its monuments, the Smithsonian museums, and cherry trees around the Tidal Basin each spring.
- Denver & the Colorado Rockies — A mile-high city on the edge of the plains below the Front Range, with Red Rocks in the foothills and Rocky Mountain National Park in the mountains beyond.
- Nashville — Tennessee’s country-music city: the Ryman Auditorium, the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Broadway’s honky-tonks.
