Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, founded in 1969 by the legendary session musicians known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section—or "The Swampers"—is a cornerstone of American music history. Located in Sheffield, Alabama, this studio emerged after the rhythm section left FAME Studios to create their own facility, quickly attracting iconic artists from across the United States and Great Britain.
Visitors can explore the original concrete block building at 3614 Jackson Highway, which once served as a coffin showroom before becoming a creative hub. Here, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, and Paul Simon, among many others, recorded timeless tracks. The studio's rich legacy includes Grammy-nominated albums by Band of Horses and the Black Keys, recorded even after its commercial closure.
Today, the restored studio offers tours, allowing music enthusiasts to step into the very rooms where soul, rock, and R&B history was made. It's a pilgrimage site for anyone fascinated by the stories behind the music and the unique "Muscle Shoals sound" that defined an era.
