Santo António — Lisbon's biggest night of the year

The night of 12-13 June is the peak of Lisbon's Santos Populares: twenty Marchas Populares — costumed parades, one per historic neighbourhood, roughly 80-100 performers each — compete down Avenida da Liberdade from 9pm, alongside collective weddings and all-night arraiais in Alfama, Mouraria and Graça with grilled sardines, bifanas and kale soup. The 2026 edition's official theme is "Somos Lisboa, Somos Europa" ("We are Lisbon, We are Europe").

São João do Porto — hammers, fireworks and grilled sardines on the Ribeira

Porto's São João is built around the same June saint's-night format but with its own signature: revellers bash each other on the head with squeaky plastic hammers (traditionally leeks) through streets packed with sardine grills. The main night runs 23-24 June across three stages (Ribeira, Avenida dos Aliados, Jardins do Palácio de Cristal), climaxing at midnight with the year's biggest fireworks display over the Ribeira and Ponte D.
