Marillion are an English rock band formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in 1979, emerging from the post-punk scene as a bridge between punk and progressive rock. By the early 1980s the band had settled into its long-running instrumental lineup of guitarist Steve Rothery, bassist Pete Trewavas, keyboardist Mark Kelly and drummer Ian Mosley.

About Marillion

Fronted by singer Fish from 1981 to 1988, the group became one of the era's most commercially successful neo-progressive acts, scoring eleven UK top 40 hits. The album Misplaced Childhood (1985) topped the UK Albums Chart and went platinum, spawning the singles "Kayleigh" (UK No. 2) and "Lavender" (UK No. 5); it followed Script for a Jester's Tear (1983) and Fugazi (1984), and preceded Clutching at Straws (1987), Fish's final album with the band.

Fish departed in 1988 citing touring and management pressures, and Steve Hogarth, formerly of the Europeans, became lead singer in 1989, bringing a new-wave sensibility that reshaped the band's sound beginning with Seasons End (1989). In 1997, when a lack of record-label backing threatened to prevent an American tour, fans crowdfunded more than $60,000 through early internet message boards, a pioneering move that Marillion built on in 2001 by funding the album Anoraknophobia through direct pre-orders that raised over £600,000.

Hogarth has now fronted the band for more than three decades, recording fourteen studio albums to Fish's four. Marillion remains active, with An Hour Before It's Dark (2022) reaching number 2 on the UK Albums Chart, following F E A R (2016), also a UK top 10 release, and a twenty-first studio album reported to be in progress.
