The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert is a live-to-film presentation of the 1992 musical film The Muppet Christmas Carol, in which a symphony orchestra performs the film's score live while the movie is projected above the stage. The original film, directed by Brian Henson in his feature directorial debut following the death of his father, Muppets creator Jim Henson, adapts Charles Dickens's 1843 novella A Christmas Carol with a cast of Muppet performers alongside Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge.
The film pairs songs written by Paul Williams with an orchestral score by Miles Goodman and follows Scrooge's redemption after visitations from the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, narrated throughout by Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat. Caine played Scrooge as straight drama rather than comedy, vowing never to "wink" at the material despite his co-stars being puppets. Contemporary reviews were mixed, with some critics singling out Williams's songs as unmemorable, though the film holds a 77 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore grade; its critical reputation has grown substantially since release, with The Guardian naming it "the greatest Christmas film ever made" in 2023.
In the concert format, licensed through Disney Concerts, an orchestra performs Goodman's score live in synchronization with the film's dialogue and effects track, a presentation style also applied to other studio films. Staged by symphony orchestras across North America and the United Kingdom during the holiday season, the production preserves the film's dialogue, puppetry, and songs while replacing its recorded score with a live orchestral performance.
