Vienna turns its entire city centre into one free, open-air New Year's Eve party — the Silvesterpfad (New Year's Eve Trail) — with themed stages at Stephansplatz, Graben, Freyung, Am Hof, Kärntner Straße and Rathausplatz, drawing around 700,000 visitors from Austria and abroad.

Quick answer

The trail itself runs every 31 December from 2pm to 2am — that timing is a fixed annual pattern — but the official organisers had not yet published the detailed 2026 stage-by-stage programme as of late July 2026. This guide covers the confirmed structure; check wienersilvesterpfad.at from autumn for the specific 2026 line-up.

Vienna Silvesterpfad 2026 — what's certain, what's not

What makes Vienna's New Year unique

Waltz at Graben: an interactive "Waltz Lessons" stage lets visitors learn the Viennese waltz in the street before midnight.
Public viewing of the State Opera: a live broadcast of the Vienna State Opera's New Year's programme is shown on an open-air screen.
It pairs directly with the Christkindlmarkt: the Rathausplatz Christmas market runs to 26 December 2026 and the adjoining Wiener Eistraum ice rink runs on to 6 January 2027, so Silvesterpfad effectively extends the same festive footprint through the New Year.

Planning your visit

Public transport runs through the night on New Year's Eve, and the inner-city stages are all within walking distance of each other and the U1/U3 (Stephansplatz) and U2 (Rathaus) metro stations.

The free event draws huge crowds — arrive at your preferred stage well before 10pm if you want a good view for midnight.

When is Vienna's Silvesterpfad in 2026?: 31 December 2026 from 2pm to 1 January 2027 at 2am — the trail's fixed annual timing. The detailed 2026 stage programme had not yet been published as of late July 2026; check wienersilvesterpfad.at from autumn.
Is the Vienna New Year's Eve trail free?: Yes, entry to every stage on the Silvesterpfad is free.
Where do the Vienna New Year fireworks happen?: The two biggest displays are at Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) and in the Prater, both visible to the large crowds gathered along the Silvesterpfad route.
