Why Cyprus?

Cyprus is arguably the easiest foreign trip a Greek traveller can take, because it barely feels foreign: road signs, menus, the evening news and even taxi-driver small talk are all in Greek. Shared language and religion remove the usual friction of an international flight.

Flights from Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion to Larnaca and Paphos are frequent and short, typically under two hours, with Aegean, Ryanair and Cyprus Airways operating the route daily; Larnaca handles most arrivals, while Paphos is the better entry point for the western resorts.

Beyond the language, the island offers something distinct from mainland Greece: more developed tourist infrastructure, long sandy beaches, archaeological sites such as Kourion and the Paphos mosaics, and a climate that stretches the season from April into November.

Where to stay

  • Limassol Cyprus's most cosmopolitan city, with a long seafront promenade, a medieval castle and an active nightlife scene.
  • Paphos A UNESCO World Heritage site for its Roman mosaics, with a quiet old harbour and beaches within easy reach.
  • Larnaca The island's main gateway, with a palm-lined seafront promenade and the Kamares aqueduct on its outskirts.
  • Ayia Napa Cyprus's nightlife capital, with Nissi Beach standing out for its turquoise, shallow water.
  • Nicosia Europe's last divided capital, with Venetian walls and Ledra Street crossing the buffer zone.

A simple 3-star hotel room runs around €60-90 per night outside peak season, rising sharply in July-August. A taverna meal costs €15-25 per person, while car rental -essentially required to get beyond the resort areas- starts at €25-35 a day. The euro is the shared currency, so no currency exchange is needed.
