Dresden

Dresden is a city rebuilt twice over: its Baroque Altstadt - the Frauenkirche, Zwinger and Semperoper - was painstakingly reconstructed after WWII firebombing, while the Neustadt across the river escaped the worst of the destruction and today holds the city's real nightlife, street art and independent cafe scene. The contrast between grand imperial stone and scruffy alternative streets is the whole appeal.
