Why Spain?
Spain is just over three hours' flight from Athens, which makes it accessible for both a long weekend and a full week's holiday. Despite the geographic distance, the two countries share common ground in daily life: late dinners, an emphasis on socialising, and a climate that supports outdoor activity for most of the year.
Barcelona and Madrid offer an alternative to the usual European capital city break: Gaudí architecture, world-class museums such as the Prado and Reina Sofía, and a nightlife scene that typically starts later than elsewhere in Europe.
Beyond the major cities, coastlines like the Costa del Sol and regions such as Andalusia offer a different flavour of summer holiday than the Greek islands, with restaurant and accommodation prices that are often more affordable outside peak season.
Where to stay
- Barcelona — Combines Gaudí architecture, a city-centre beach, and neighbourhoods like the Gothic Quarter and El Born.
- Madrid — The capital offers world-class museums (Prado, Reina Sofía), Retiro Park, and an intense nightlife scene.
- Malaga — Gateway to the Costa del Sol, with a historic centre, beaches, and the Picasso Museum in the painter's birthplace.
- Seville — An Andalusian city with a strong flamenco tradition, its cathedral, and summer temperatures that often exceed 40°C.
- Zaragoza — A less touristy city between Madrid and Barcelona, with the Basilica del Pilar and more affordable prices.
A meal at a neighbourhood restaurant typically costs €12-20, a 3-star hotel room €60-100 per night outside July-August, and a metro or bus fare in Madrid or Barcelona runs €1.50-2.50 per trip.
