Overview
Paris Plages is a listed event in Paris, sourced from the city's official open-data agenda. Free entry. Check the link for the latest schedule and ticket details.
Each summer, the banks of the Seine transform into a temporary urban beach paradise as part of Paris Plages. Roadways are closed off to traffic, replaced by sand, palm trees, and a festive atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a variety of free activities, including Swedish fitness sessions (Swedish Fit), yoga, Pilates, sophrology, dance, and ballet sculpt classes, all held in the open air along the river.
The initiative, launched in 2002 by then-mayor Bertrand Delanoë, was designed to offer a seaside escape for Parisians unable to leave the city during the hot summer months. Originally a single beach on the Right Bank, it expanded to include the Left Bank in 2006 and later the Bassin de la Villette. By 2026, the program also features supervised open-water swimming in designated zones within the Seine itself, following extensive water purification efforts tied to the 2024 Olympics.
Beyond the beaches and fitness classes, Paris Plages creates a lively community space where locals and tourists alike can relax, socialize, and participate in free cultural and sports events. It's a quintessential Parisian summer experience that turns the city's heart into a vibrant, sandy retreat.
