Christmas and New Year in the Netherlands: Sinterklaas, December Events and NYE

Reviewed by Wanderistan editorial team · Last updated Aug 6, 2026

December here is not one holiday but two, and visitors who plan for the second one keep missing the first. Sinterklaas, on the evening of 5 December, is the gift-giving occasion most Dutch families actually build the month around. Christmas itself, three weeks later, is quieter, more about meals and days off than about presents.

Quick answer

That shapes what a visitor finds. This is not a country built around a market circuit — Christmas markets exist, and there are good ones, particularly in the southern provinces, but they are a regional tradition rather than the centre of the season. What December really offers is an unusually dense indoor calendar: touring concerts, ballet, theatre and comedy running nightly in cities that are cold, dark and wet enough to make an evening indoors the obvious plan.

Two Decembers: Sinterklaas, then Christmas

Sinterklaas arrives in the country in mid-November, in a televised arrival by steamboat that is treated as a genuine national event, and the weeks that follow build towards pakjesavond — "parcel evening" — on 5 December. That is the night gifts are exchanged, traditionally with rhymes written to go with them. Shops are busy through late November and the first days of December for exactly this reason, and then noticeably calmer afterwards.

Christmas is the second, softer half. Both 25 and 26 December are public holidays — Eerste and Tweede Kerstdag, first and second Christmas Day — which gives most people two consecutive days off and makes the 26th a normal day for visiting family, going out for a meal or getting to a museum. It is a good day to be a visitor, because plenty is open and the cities are unusually calm.

For a traveller, the practical read is this: come in the first week of December and you catch a country in full Sinterklaas mode, with lit-up shopping streets and a specific set of seasonal foods. Come at the end of the month and you get the quieter, indoor version, with a much heavier concert and theatre programme to choose from.

What is actually on in December

The winter programme leans indoors and it leans big. Concert halls and arenas in the four largest cities run close to nightly through December, ballet tours the larger theatres, and comedy and musical bookings fill the rest. The country's venue stock is well suited to this — the same halls that carry the autumn touring season simply keep going — so a December weekend in any of the big cities usually offers more choice than a summer one, not less.

Light and lantern trails are the outdoor counterpart, and they run from late autumn into winter in several cities. They work well in the Dutch dark, which arrives early: by late December the afternoons are short enough that an early-evening walk is effectively a night walk.

Winter bookings are announced on a rolling basis, so check the venue's or promoter's own programme for the dates you are travelling.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day

New Year's Eve is Oudejaarsavond, and the food is the most reliable part of it: oliebollen, deep-fried dough balls dusted with icing sugar, sold from temporary street stalls that appear across the country in the run-up and disappear again in January. They are the one thing you should not skip.

Fireworks deserve a careful note rather than a confident one. The rules around consumer fireworks in the Netherlands have changed repeatedly in recent years, and they also vary between municipalities — several cities operate their own restrictions or ban zones independently of national rules. Check what applies in the specific city you will be in, and treat anything you read from an earlier year as out of date.

1 January is a public holiday and the country is very quiet. Public transport runs a reduced timetable on both 31 December and 1 January, often stopping early on the evening of the 31st, so if you are going out on New Year's Eve plan the journey back before you leave.

Practical notes for a December trip

  • Both 25 and 26 December are public holidays, and 1 January is too. Many shops close on the 25th and the 1st; the 26th is much more normal, with plenty open.
  • Public transport runs holiday timetables around all three dates, and services on the evening of 31 December are typically cut short. Check the day you travel, not the week before.
  • Museums and major attractions vary — some close on 25 December and 1 January, others stay open with shortened hours. Confirm on the venue's own site before building a day around it.
  • Daylight is short. Sunset comes early enough in late December that outdoor plans need to happen in the middle of the day, and the weather is reliably grey, wet and windy rather than snowy.
  • Book concert and theatre tickets ahead. December is the busiest indoor month of the year and the best-known bookings sell out.
  • Christmas markets are worth seeking out in the southern provinces, but do not plan a whole trip around a market circuit — that is not how the season works here.

FAQ

Is Christmas or Sinterklaas the bigger holiday in the Netherlands?
Sinterklaas, on the evening of 5 December, is traditionally the gift-giving occasion and the one most families build the month around. Christmas at the end of the month is quieter and more focused on meals and time off, with both 25 and 26 December as public holidays.
Are there Christmas markets in the Netherlands?
Yes, but they are a regional tradition rather than a nationwide one, and the best-known are in the southern provinces. They are worth visiting if you are nearby, but the Dutch December is really built around Sinterklaas in early December and a very full indoor concert and theatre calendar through the month.
What is open on 25 and 26 December?
Both are public holidays, but they behave differently. Many shops and some attractions close on the 25th, while the 26th — Tweede Kerstdag — is much more normal, with shops, restaurants and museums widely open. Check individual venues, since practice varies.
Can you set off fireworks on New Year's Eve in the Netherlands?
The rules have changed repeatedly in recent years and also differ between municipalities, with several cities operating their own restrictions. Check the current rules for the specific city you will be in rather than relying on what applied in a previous year.
What do people eat at New Year in the Netherlands?
Oliebollen — deep-fried dough balls dusted with icing sugar — sold from temporary street stalls that appear across the country in the weeks before New Year and vanish again in January.
