Mikołajki (St Nicholas Day) falls every 6 December and is Poland's traditional opening act for the festive season: children leave a polished shoe or boot out the night before, and wake to small gifts — sweets, fruit, a small toy — left by "Święty Mikołaj." Bigger presents are saved for Christmas Eve itself.

Quick answer
The date is fixed and the custom needs no confirmation — it has run this way for centuries. What does vary year to year is which of the country's Christmas markets stage a dedicated Mikołajki weekend (Santa meet-and-greets, kids' workshops) as part of their programme; check each market's own listing closer to December.

What makes Mikołajki distinctive
- It's a children's holiday first: schools often hold a small gift exchange (classmates draw names in advance) on the school day closest to 6 December.
- It sits ahead of, not instead of, Christmas Eve gift-giving — Polish tradition keeps the two separate, with Mikołajki gifts deliberately smaller.
- The custom traces back over a thousand years to the historical Saint Nicholas of Myra, making it one of the oldest continuously observed winter customs covered in this guide.
Where to see it in the cities this site covers
If visiting Poland in early December, Kraków's Rynek Główny, Warsaw's Plac Defilad, Wrocław's Rynek and Gdańsk's Targ Węglowy Christmas markets are all typically open by 6 December and are the easiest places to catch a Mikołajki atmosphere alongside the market stalls.

- What is Mikołajki?
- Mikołajki is Polish St Nicholas Day, celebrated every 6 December, when children traditionally find small gifts — sweets, fruit, a small toy — left in a shoe or boot they set out the night before.
- Is Mikołajki the same as Christmas in Poland?
- No — it's a separate, smaller gift-giving custom on 6 December. Poland's main Christmas Eve celebration (Wigilia) on 24 December is the bigger event, with larger presents.
- Do Polish Christmas markets do anything special for St Nicholas Day?
- Many do — Kraków, Warsaw, Wrocław and Gdańsk's markets have historically run Santa meet-and-greets or children's activities around 6 December, though the specific 2026 programme for each market was not yet published at time of research.
