Entry is free. The market is open 11–22 on weekdays and 10–22 at weekends, and the organiser describes 2026 as the 19th edition.
The market started in 2007, the year Sibiu held the title of European cultural capital, as a private initiative of Barbara Schöfnagel, social attaché of the embassy of Austria. Today it is run by Asociația Events for Tourism, an association based in Sibiu. For 2026 it carries the EECMA label awarded by the European Excellent Christmas Market Association, which selected 12 markets in Europe from more than 600 assessed by an international jury.
More than 120 exhibitors from 36 counties of the country and from other countries bring traditional products and handicrafts to the wooden stalls: jewellery, ceramics, carved wood, candles and local foods, all made by hand. Exhibitors for 2026 were selected from 1 May 2026.
Several attractions stand in the square. Roata Panoramică, a 22-metre observation wheel, looks over Piața Mare and the old town. The Patinoar ice rink covers 600 square metres and takes up to 300 skaters at a time.
Atelierul lui Moș Crăciun runs craft workshops for children aged 5 to 9, with 5 different themes across the season, and Liftul Fermecat is a short lift ride of about 5 minutes to Casa lui Moș Crăciun, with tickets sold online. Christmas Chalet, a wooden hut built in the style of an alpine mountain cabin and the first of its kind at a Christmas market in Romania, serves mulled wine and hot dishes, with DJ evenings on some nights.
Scena Comunității, the community stage opened in 2025, lets children, soloists and bands sign up in advance to perform carols for the crowd in Piața Mare. The concert and carol programme for the main stage in 2026 has not yet been published; the organiser says it will be announced closer to the opening on 13 November 2026.
A Golden Ticket gives unlimited access for one full day to the main attractions for 100 lei, and part of the proceeds is donated to a social cause.
