Beck: Genre-Blending Sound Comes to Portland

Beck brings his shape-shifting songbook to Portland for a headlining show. The Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter broke through with “Loser”, then spent years moving between folk, funk, soul, hip hop, electronica, alternative rock, country, and psychedelia. Expect a set that can pivot from sample-heavy collages to quieter acoustic moments.

Longtime fans will likely recognize material from much of his catalog — Odelay and Sea Change are both ranked among the 500 greatest albums of all time, and Morning Phase’s Album of the Year Grammy win points to a folk-leaning side. However the setlist lands, Beck’s arrangements often layer drum machines, live instrumentation, and sound effects into a genre-spanning show.
