Rivers' career ran for more than seven decades. He played tenor, alto and soprano saxophone, flute, harmonica, sang, and also played bagpipes, and his work covered jazz, blues, R&B, funk, gospel and rock. He toured and recorded with Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Huey "Piano" Smith & the Clowns, Deacon John, Professor Longhair, Earl King and Allen Toussaint.
His playing features on New Orleans recordings such as Frankie Ford's "Sea Cruise" and Al Johnson's "Carnival Time. " He also played on the soundtracks of Clint Eastwood films including Tightrope and The Bridges of Madison County. Rivers performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for decades, and his James Rivers Movement formed part of his musical legacy.
His longtime band included pianist Peter Cho, who continues to carry forward the music and spirit of their collaboration. Rivers called Cho the keyboard player in his longstanding group, with bassist Millard Green and drummer Cameron Woods. The tribute celebrates the songs, sounds and musical traditions of Rivers' career.
