Nickel-A-Dance: Jamil Sharif New Orleans Extravaganza

Nickel-A-Dance: Jamil Sharif New Orleans Extravaganza takes place at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro. Nickel-A-Dance is a free, family-friendly jazz concert series in New Orleans that celebrates the city's musical heritage. Founded in 1994, the series features local jazz musicians performing classic jazz, blues, and swing.

It began at Café Brasil on Frenchmen Street and now takes place at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro on Sundays from 3:00--6:00 PM. The event is open to all ages. Jamil Sharif is a New Orleans trumpeter, composer, and bandleader.

He is the son of trumpeter Emery Humphrey Thompson (Umar Sharif), and he studied with Ellis Marsalis, Alvin Batiste, Roger Dickerson Sr., and Edward "Kidd" Jordan. His career includes performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, international festivals and concerts, Broadway productions, and contributions to the soundtracks of The Big Easy, Undercover Blues, and Ray. He has released three albums.

For this performance, Sharif leads The New Orleans Extravaganza through traditional jazz, swing, classic R&B, and big band music. This is a free program with no ticketing. Shows run from 3-6pm, with doors at 2:30pm.
