Red Nova at Blue Note Hawaii

Red Nova is Honolulu's free jazz trio, known for completely improvised sets that abandon key signatures and musical safety nets. Led by Peter Shaindlin on trumpet and flugelhorn, with Randy Wong on acoustic bass and Jay Jaskot on percussion, the group creates spontaneous, adrenaline-fueled explorations of sound. Their debut live album, *Presence of Mind*, recorded at Hawaii Public Radio's Atherton Studio, earned Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations.

Opening the evening is Mika Mimura, a Japan-born percussionist and vibraphonist who has performed with Grammy-winning artists and toured internationally with Banda Magda. Her set bridges Japanese and Hawaiian musical traditions, reflecting her work in sound healing and wellness. Together, the two acts offer an evening of boundary-pushing jazz in an intimate club setting, where every performance is a one-of-a-kind sonic journey.
