Ax and the Hatchetmen
Ax and the Hatchetmen are an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago in 2018, led by vocalist and guitarist Axel Ellis. Guitarist Salvatore Defilippis joined after the two connected online over a fingerstyle guitar video; several members met through the Midwest Young Artists jazz program. The lineup also includes bassist Hunter Olshefke, trumpeter Phil Pistone, saxophonist Quinn Dolan and drummer Chaandmon Croft.

Acerca de Ax and the Hatchetmen
The band's sound blends garage rock, psychedelia and jam-band elements with a horn section. After winning the Evanston Battle of the Bands in 2019, the group built an online following that reached roughly 150,000 TikTok followers by 2022, leading to a deal with Arista Records. Its debut album, So Much to Tell You, arrived in October 2025 with collaborations from Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes.
The band's rise from local Chicago clubs to national visibility included festival slots at Lollapalooza in 2023 and Shaky Knees in 2024. Frontman Axel Ellis has also worked as an actor, appearing in the Amazon Prime series The Runarounds, a show centered on a fictional band, separate from his work fronting Ax and the Hatchetmen.
Following the release of So Much to Tell You, the band has continued releasing music, including the single "Loser," building on an album that grew out of several years of independently released EPs.
