Death Cab for Cutie
Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington, in 1997 as a solo recording project for singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard, then a student at Western Washington University. Gibbard soon recruited guitarist and producer Chris Walla, bassist Nick Harmer, and a drummer to form a full band, taking the group's name from a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band featured in the Beatles' film Magical Mystery Tour.

Acerca de Death Cab for Cutie
After the 1998 debut Something About Airplanes, the band built a devoted underground following through We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes (2000) and The Photo Album (2001). Transatlanticism (2003) became their breakthrough, going platinum and landing songs on television and film soundtracks. Their major-label debut, Plans (2005), produced the hits I Will Follow You into the Dark and Soul Meets Body, and the band has since received multiple Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album.
Jason McGerr joined as drummer in 2002, and the band's sound matured from its emo-adjacent early records into more polished, melodically driven indie rock. Narrow Stairs (2008) topped the Billboard 200, while Kintsugi (2015) marked founding guitarist Walla's final album with the group before his departure.
Gibbard, also known for the side project the Postal Service, has kept Death Cab recording into the 2020s, releasing Asphalt Meadows (2022) and, after ending a 22-year major-label run, I Built You a Tower via Anti- Records.
