Trier is Germany's oldest city, built up around the Porta Nigra and other Roman monuments from its time as an imperial capital under the Tetrarchy. Its old town blends Roman ruins with a Gothic cathedral and baroque squares, all set among the vineyard-covered slopes of the Moselle valley.
