Why Croatia?

Croatia's Adriatic coast is roughly two flight hours from Germany's main airports and can also be reached by car within a day to a day and a half, a combination that makes it one of the most frequently booked long-distance destinations for German travellers. More than 1,200 islands, clear water and historic towns such as Split and Dubrovnik shape the coastal tourism offer.

For many German families, Croatia is primarily a road-trip destination: the route from Munich or Nuremberg through Austria and Slovenia to the Croatian coast runs on well-developed motorways, and a dense network of campsites has built up along the Adriatic over decades, ranging from simple pitches to large resorts with dedicated motorhome infrastructure. Caravans towed behind German-plated cars are a familiar sight on Croatian motorways, especially during summer.

Prices in Croatia generally sit below Western European levels, though coastal towns become noticeably more expensive during peak season (July/August) than the inland areas or shoulder months. Sailing and boat charter are a well-established part of the offer: from Split, Zadar and other marinas, the islands off the Kvarner Gulf and Dalmatian coast can be explored by charter boat or organised sailing trip, a segment in which Croatia ranks among the most established Mediterranean destinations.

Where to stay

• Split — Split, with its UNESCO-listed Diocletian's Palace and the Adriatic's largest ferry port, is the main hub for trips to the offshore islands of Hvar, Brač and Vis.
• Dubrovnik — Dubrovnik, with its fully preserved city walls and old town at the southern tip of the Croatian coast, draws the highest number of international visitors, with prices and crowds rising accordingly in peak season.
• Zadar — Zadar combines a compact old town with the Sea Organ and direct scheduled flights from several German cities, and serves as a starting point for the Kornati Islands and Paklenica National Park.
• Zagreb — Zagreb sits inland away from the coast and is booked by German travellers mainly for city breaks and its Christmas market, rather than as a base for beach holidays.
• Rijeka — Rijeka is the main port of the Kvarner Gulf, close to the Istrian peninsula and the resort town of Opatija, but receives markedly fewer tourists than Split or Dubrovnik.

A mid-range double room on the coast typically costs €100–180/night in peak season (July/August) and €60–110/night in shoulder months (May, June, September, October); a simple restaurant meal runs €15–25 per person, and ferry tickets to the islands are usually in the low double-digit euro range.
