Rick Wakeman (Richard Christopher Wakeman, born 18 May 1949 in Perivale, Middlesex) is an English keyboardist and composer. He studied at the Royal College of Music before leaving in 1969 to work as a session musician, playing on recordings such as David Bowie's Space Oddity and Life on Mars? and Cat Stevens' Morning Has Broken.
He joined the progressive rock band Yes in 1971 and played on the albums Fragile, Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans. He went on to have five stints with the group until 2004 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Yes.
His solo career began with The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973) and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974), which reached number one in the UK and received a Grammy nomination. He has released over 100 solo albums, has presented television and radio programmes, and hosts a podcast. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2021 for services to music and broadcasting.
