Split
A Roman palace, still alive
Split is a living Roman palace wrapped around a working port city: Diocletian's Palace isn't a museum you tour but a warren of cafes, market stalls and washing lines strung between 1,700-year-old walls. By day the pull is Bačvice's sandy beach and the ferry queues for Hvar, Brač and Vis; by night the Riva promenade fills for the evening korzo and the palace basements turn into open-air bars and clubs.
