The Achille Lauro hijacking remains one of the most infamous maritime terrorist incidents of the 20th century. On October 7, 1985, four members of the Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF) seized control of the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro off the coast of Egypt, taking hundreds of passengers hostage. The hijackers, demanding the release of Palestinian prisoners, murdered 69-year-old American tourist Leon Klinghoffer, a wheelchair-bound Jewish man, and threw his body overboard.

The hijacking unfolded against a backdrop of escalating Middle East tensions, including the Israeli bombing of PLO headquarters in Tunis just days earlier. The PLF faction led by Abu Abbas orchestrated the attack, which was initially intended as a suicide mission targeting Israeli soldiers in Ashdod. The incident sparked an international crisis, culminating in the "Sigonella Crisis" when U.S. fighter jets intercepted the Egyptian plane carrying the hijackers, leading to a standoff with Italian authorities.

The aftermath saw the hijackers eventually tried in Italy, while the event highlighted the vulnerabilities of civilian cruise ships to terrorism. The Achille Lauro itself continued service until 1994, but the hijacking forever changed maritime security protocols. Today, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of political violence.
