Detroit

Detroit is a city rebuilding itself in full view: Motown and techno were both born here, the auto industry's rise and collapse left both grand Art Deco towers and genuine ruins, and a real revival is underway downtown and in Midtown without papering over the harder blocks further out. It rewards visitors who want honest urban history over a polished tourist trail. Expect a lot of concrete, wide empty-feeling streets between the interesting bits, and real warmth once you find the neighbourhoods.
