Tchaikovsky's two-act classical ballet The Nutcracker is performed by The Former Moscow Ballet. Adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann's story, it unfolds on Christmas Eve as a child's Nutcracker doll comes to life. The choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov features a battle with the Mouse King and a growing Christmas tree.
The ballet premiered in 1892 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Its score, including the famous use of the celesta, has become one of Tchaikovsky's most celebrated compositions. This production brings the timeless holiday tale to the stage.
