The Tucson Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of José Luis Gómez, presents Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5. Composed during the summers of 1901 and 1902, this symphony is renowned for its opening trumpet solo and the deeply expressive Adagietto.
The work spans five movements, grouped into three parts, from a funeral march to a triumphant rondo. Mahler's growing interest in counterpoint, influenced by Bach, permeates the score. The orchestra's performance captures the full emotional range of this monumental piece.
The symphony is sometimes described as being in C♯ minor, but Mahler objected to labeling the entire work with a single key.
