This guided walking tour explores the historic Butte-aux-Cailles neighborhood in Paris's 13th arrondissement. Once covered in vineyards and meadows like Montmartre, the hill was also crossed by the Bièvre River, which attracted the Gobelins tapestry factory and numerous small workshops, dye-houses, and tanneries. The area's landscape transformed during the industrial revolution, but due to many quarries that made foundations difficult, it largely escaped the grand Haussmann renovations of the mid-19th century.
For a long time a working-class district with modest buildings, the Butte-aux-Cailles still retains traces of its agricultural and industrial past, visible in street names and public buildings such as the Rue du Moulin-des-Prés. The tour is offered by the Comité d'histoire de la Ville de Paris and includes a digital trail highlighting the neighborhood's history and heritage, created by the Department of History, Memory, and Associative Museums as part of Paris's participatory budget.
