The Kastelruther Spatzen are a band from Kastelruth in South Tyrol, Italy, named after their home village. Wikidata records the group as formed in 1975, when six musicians, among them Karl Schieder, started playing together, while the band's first album appeared in 1983, which German Wikipedia treats as the official founding year. Their early work was in the Oberkrainer style, and from the late 1980s they moved to volkstümlicher Schlager.
Norbert Rier has been the lead vocalist since 1979 and the leader of the group since 1983. The current line-up listed on the band's website comprises Norbert Rier, Albin Gross, Rüdiger Hemmelmann, Karl Heufler, Kurt Dasser, Valentin Silbernagl and Walter Mauroner. German Wikipedia states that the band has sold over 15 million recordings.
Among their best-known songs are Das Mädchen mit den erloschenen Augen, their first gold record, and Tränen passen nicht zu dir, which won the 1990 Grand Prix der Volksmusik for Germany. The 2015 album Heimat – Deine Lieder was their first to reach number one on the German album charts. Their awards include the Goldene Stimmgabel (five times), the Krone der Volksmusik (eleven times) and several Echo Pop prizes.
