Belgium is small enough that choosing a city matters less than choosing a base. Most of the country sits within about two hours of Brussels by train, the intercity network is dense and frequent, and almost every place worth seeing is a station and a short walk. Plan a Belgian trip as one base and a series of day trips and you will see far more than by moving hotels every night.

What differs between the cities is character, not distance. The country divides into Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north, French-speaking Wallonia in the south and bilingual Brussels in the middle, and the two halves feel genuinely different — in the architecture, in the food, and in what the theatres and concert halls put on.

How to combine them
Brussels is the obvious base. It sits in the middle of the country, has the most direct rail connections, and is where international trains arrive. From there, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges are all comfortable returns in a day, and Liège, Namur and Mons are realistic if you leave in the morning.
If you would rather avoid a capital, Ghent and Antwerp both work as bases too — Ghent for the Flemish triangle with Bruges, Antwerp if the events calendar is the point. For a Wallonia-weighted trip, Liège or Namur put the Meuse valley and the Ardennes within reach.
What Belgium’s size does not mean is that everything is next door to everything. The country is compact around Brussels, but the coast in the north-west and the Ardennes in the south-east are at opposite ends of it, and a hop between those two is a half-day of travel rather than an afternoon. Pair cities that share a corner of the map, or route through Brussels and accept the change.
The rule that catches people out is the day-trip crowd rather than the distance. Bruges in particular absorbs an enormous volume of day visitors in the middle of the day and is a completely different city in the early morning and the evening — staying the night there, or arriving late, is the single biggest upgrade to a Belgian itinerary.
Practical notes
- Trains are the default. The intercity network links every city above and runs frequently, so day trips between neighbouring cities are easy — check the journey time before pairing two cities at opposite ends of the country.
- Flanders is Dutch-speaking, Wallonia is French-speaking, and Brussels is officially bilingual. English is widely spoken in all of them, but theatre and comedy are in the local language.
- Autumn and winter carry the busiest indoor events calendar. Summer is better for the coast, the Ardennes and open-air programming.
- The coast is served by a tram line running the length of the shoreline, which makes a beach day easy to add to a Flanders trip.
- Sunday is quiet in most Belgian cities for shopping but good for markets, museums and the riverfronts.
- Historic centres are pedestrian-heavy and cobbled. Bring shoes for it, and skip the hire car unless you are heading into the Ardennes.
