Escape to Moominvalley

Escape to Moominvalley is the Architecture and Design Museum’s main exhibition exploring Tove Jansson’s relationship with architecture, the built environment and design. The journey begins with the landscapes and places close to Jansson’s heart — her Helsinki atelier and the remote summer island Klovharun — before leading into a reimagined Moominvalley. Archived materials, personal objects and photographs let visitors step into the spaces that shaped Jansson’s creative world.

Jansson first wrote the Moomins during World War II, and Moominvalley was originally envisioned as a safe haven in turbulent times. The exhibition carries that spirit forward, framing themes of home and homelessness, solitude and community, safety and insecurity as questions for today. Contemporary designers and architects add their own responses on survival, shelter, community and resilience. A separate audio guide accompanied by Jani Toivola offers a personal interpretation of letters, cartoons and archipelago landscapes.
