The South Summit is a subsidiary peak of Mount Everest, located between the South Col and the main summit. It is a dome-shaped peak of snow and ice, approximately 130 meters from the summit of Everest.
First climbed by Charles Evans and Tom Bourdillon in 1953, the South Summit is a popular place for Everest climbers to pause and change oxygen bottles. It was also the site of tragedy during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, where guide Rob Hall and three others died.
From the South Summit, climbers can see the cornice traverse and the main summit in clear weather.
