Things to do in Athens 2026

Athens is at its best in 2026 from late spring through summer, when its open-air culture comes alive. The Greek capital hosts the Athens & Epidaurus Festival — theatre and music beneath the Acropolis — alongside the big coastal music festivals Release Athens in June and Ejekt in July, drawing international rock, pop and indie headliners.

Beyond the events, Athens layers 2,500 years of history over a fast, modern city: the Acropolis and its museum, the ancient Agora, the neighbourhoods of Plaka, Monastiraki and Koukaki, rooftop bars with Parthenon views, and a food and nightlife scene that runs late into warm nights.

Top Athens events in 2026

Athens & Epidaurus Festival (summer) — ancient drama, dance and concerts at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus under the Acropolis.

Ejekt Festival (July) — rock and indie festival, a fixture of the Athens summer music calendar.

Why visit Athens

The Acropolis is the obvious anchor — go early or late to beat the heat and crowds — but Athens rewards wandering. The pedestrianised Dionysiou Areopagitou walkway links the major ancient sites; Plaka and Anafiotika feel like island villages under the rock; and Monastiraki's flea market spills into some of the city's best mezze tavernas.

Athens International Airport (ATH) connects the city to the rest of Europe and the islands, and the metro makes the centre and the port of Piraeus easy. It is the natural launchpad for a wider Greece trip, with fast ferries to the Cyclades from Piraeus.
