O Hagen Rether
Hagen Rether is a German cabaret artist and pianist, born on 8 October 1969 in Bucharest, Romania, to German-speaking Transylvanian Saxon parents.
Hagen Rether is a German cabaret artist and pianist, born on 8 October 1969 in Bucharest, Romania, to German-speaking Transylvanian Saxon parents. His family moved to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1973. He began piano at age eight and studied at the Folkwang school in Essen, where he lives.
From 1996 to 2005 he was the pianist in Ludger Stratmann's programme, and since 2003 he has performed the solo cabaret programme Liebe, which he keeps updating. The show is mainly political and covers religion, mass media, capitalism, consumerism and globalisation. He is known for opening with a black grand piano that he cleans on stage, and audio recordings of the programme were released from 2005 onward. He has appeared on television in Mitternachtsspitzen, Neues aus der Anstalt and Satire Gipfel.
His awards include the Bayerischer Kabarettpreis (2005), the Deutscher Kleinkunstpreis in the cabaret category (2008), the Deutscher Kabarettpreis (2010) and the Swiss Cornichon (2010). He was nominated for the Adolf-Grimme-Preis in 2008, and the asteroid 233653 Rether was named after him in 2011. He is a member of attac and Amnesty International.
