Best cities to visit in Cyprus in 2026

Cyprus is small enough to base yourself in one city and day-trip the rest, so the choice comes down to the trip you want: nightlife and a marina, UNESCO ruins and quiet harbours, a family beach, or a real capital with museums and no crowds.

Quick answer

Below are the six cities travellers search for most, ranked roughly by how much there is to do year-round — what each is known for, who it suits, and where it falls short. Each links through to a full city guide with things to do, the events calendar and where to stay.

1. Limassol — the events capital

Limassol is the island’s second city and its busiest coastal resort, and it has by far the fullest calendar — concerts, festivals, wine events and the biggest carnival on Cyprus. The Limassol Marina, the restored old town around the medieval castle, and the long Molos seafront promenade give it a city buzz that runs all year, not just in summer.

It is also the base for the Krasochoria wine villages, the City of Dreams Mediterranean casino resort, and the cruise port. If you want something on most nights of your trip, stay here.

  • Best for: nightlife, dining, live events, a marina base with things to do off-season.
  • Less ideal if: you want a quiet, small-town feel or a right-on-the-sand beach resort.

2. Paphos — UNESCO history on the west coast

Paphos pairs a laid-back harbour with genuine world-class heritage: the Paphos Archaeological Park and its Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings, and Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou) just down the coast — the whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Paphos was a European Capital of Culture in 2017.

It is quieter and more spread out than Limassol or Ayia Napa, which makes it a favourite for families, couples and golf trips. The harbour, castle and old town of Ktima give you a full day without ever hitting a club.

  • Best for: history and archaeology, quieter beaches, golf, family trips.
  • Less ideal if: you want a big nightlife scene or a walkable, compact stay.

3. Larnaca — the easy airport base

Larnaca is where most visitors land, and plenty never leave — the palm-lined Finikoudes promenade runs straight along the town beach, the Church of Saint Lazarus anchors a walkable centre, and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque sits beside the salt lake, where flamingos gather in winter.

It is the most budget-friendly of the coastal cities and the most convenient first or last night of a trip, with everything a short walk from the seafront.

  • Best for: a convenient, walkable, good-value base near the airport.
  • Less ideal if: you want dramatic scenery or a large events programme.

4. Nicosia — the capital with no beach

Nicosia is the real capital and the last divided capital in Europe, split by the Green Line you can cross on foot at Ledra Street. Inside the Venetian walls you get the island’s best museums (the Cyprus Museum), the restored Faneromeni and Laiki Geitonia quarters, and a dining and café scene aimed at locals rather than tourists.

There is no beach, so it is a city break rather than a resort — but it is the one place on Cyprus that feels lived-in year-round and rewards a day or two of wandering.

  • Best for: museums, old-town history, authentic city culture, a rainy or off-season day.
  • Less ideal if: a beach is non-negotiable.

5. Ayia Napa — beaches and nightlife

Ayia Napa is the party and beach capital of Cyprus. Nissi Beach and the surrounding coves have the island’s most famous sand, Cape Greco national forest park and its sea caves sit right next door, and the club strip and marina draw a young summer crowd from across Europe.

It is a summer town — brilliant from June to September, much quieter the rest of the year. WaterWorld waterpark and easy boat trips make it work for older kids too, but the pull is beaches by day and clubs by night.

  • Best for: beaches, watersports, nightlife, a summer group trip.
  • Less ideal if: you visit off-season or want a calm, cultural stay.

6. Protaras — the family beach resort

Protaras, just up the coast from Ayia Napa, is the calmer, family-oriented alternative. Fig Tree Bay is regularly rated one of Europe’s best beaches — shallow, clear and sheltered — and the resort strip is built around families rather than clubs.

It is quiet in the shoulder seasons and busy but relaxed in high summer, with an aquarium, boat trips and the illuminated dancing fountains as the main draws. Pair it with an evening out in nearby Ayia Napa if you want both.

  • Best for: families, couples, calm swimming, a quieter beach base.
  • Less ideal if: you want nightlife or year-round activity.

Which Cyprus city should you choose?

For a first trip that mixes everything, base in Limassol (most to do) or Larnaca (easiest and cheapest) and day-trip out — nowhere on the island is more than about a 90-minute drive. Choose Paphos for history and a slower pace, Ayia Napa for beaches and nightlife, Protaras for a family beach, and Nicosia if you specifically want a city break over a beach holiday.

FAQ

What is the best city to visit in Cyprus?
It depends on the trip. Limassol has the most to do year-round and the fullest events calendar; Paphos is best for history and a quieter pace; Ayia Napa for beaches and nightlife; Larnaca is the easiest, best-value base near the airport; Protaras is the top pick for families; and Nicosia is the choice for a museum-and-old-town city break.
Which city in Cyprus has the best beaches?
Ayia Napa (Nissi Beach) and Protaras (Fig Tree Bay) have the most famous sand and the clearest water. Larnaca and Limassol have long town beaches that are convenient rather than spectacular; Paphos beaches are quieter and more spread out.
How many days do you need in Cyprus?
Five to seven days lets you base in one city and day-trip the others comfortably. The island is compact — Limassol to Ayia Napa or Paphos is roughly an hour to 90 minutes by car — so a single base plus a rental car covers most of it.
Do you need a car to get around Cyprus?
A car makes it far easier to combine cities and reach beaches, wine villages and archaeological sites. Buses connect the main cities but run less often in the evenings and off-season, so most visitors staying more than a few days rent a car.
