Philosophische-Reihe 2026 - Apl. Prof. Dr. Julius Schälike (P)

Philosophische-Reihe 2026 - Apl. Prof. Dr. Julius Schälike (P) is a philosophy lecture at Trinkkuranlage - Kleiner Saal in Bad Nauheim on Friday, 30 October 2026, at 19:30. The talk is titled "Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn" and deals with punishment, revenge and retribution.

It starts from the question of why punishment is needed at all. A thief must return what he stole, but it is less obvious why he should also be punished, perhaps even imprisoned. One common answer is that the threat of punishment deters.

Another concept treats punishment as retribution for wrongdoing, so the punishment must match the deed. Many philosophers hold that all attempts at justification fail, and some see an archaic need for revenge behind punishment. The lecture sets out to develop a theory of punishment in which both deterrence and retribution play a role.

Tickets start at EUR 7, and a discount is available. The venue is at Ernst-Ludwig-Ring 1, entrance Kurstr.
